It would be severely irresponsible of me not to inform you of all the safety tips and hazards that come with reconditioning batteries. Don’t let that first sentence deter you though! Reconditioning lead acid batteries is very safe provided you follow some simple precautions.

I can promise you that this article is NOT designed to scare you off from reconditioning your own batteries… far from it! It’s just the safest way to proceed is to be properly informed. If you know the dangers you’re not likely to hurt yourself because you know what to watch out for.

Working with batteries safely is pretty easy as long as you use common sense and always remember to follow these guidelines:

Work With A Partner

This is a recommended safety tip. Should something happen when you recondition your batteries (you accidentally get zapped) there’s another person who can respond with help. The partner is just there to observe so it can really be anybody.

Rubber Gloves

Sturdy rubber gloves really are a must when you recondition batteries. Since there’s enough current in a battery to kill you any current that passes across your heart can cause some serious problems. Rubber gloves are non-conductive so by wearing them you eliminate the possibility of getting shocked.

Remove Jewelry

Since jewelry like rings, watches etc. are excellent conductors it’s not the best idea to wear them when working on a battery. They conduct electricity much better than human skin so accidental contact with the battery is not a good thing.

Protective Eyewear

Protective eyewear isn’t needed all the time when working with lead acid batteries. The only time you must wear eyewear is when you take the caps off the battery to refill the water in the battery or to change it. I don’t recommend letting a battery get to the stage where you need to re-juvenate the acid inside so all you’re going to need protective eyewear for adding distilled water and measuring the specific gravity of the battery.

Proper Ventilation

If you don’t follow any other suggestion in this article make sure that you follow this one! Always make sure that whenever you’re charging the battery (that includes it being hooked up to a desulfator) the battery needs to be in a well ventilated area. Charging (desulfators DO charge the battery somewhat because they send power into the battery) a lead acid battery causes it to release hydrogen gas which isn’t something you want to have lying around in a contained space.
